2023 Music

Here are all of the 2023 albums that I’ve listened to in 2023; a full explanation of how the categories work can be found at the bottom of the page.

If super-long lists of titles aren’t your thing, at the end of each year I publish a more complete look at my favourite 20 albums.

Previous Year

The top section of the list (New) is my queue; albums that pique my interest get added here as I discover them. My intention is to give each record at least one full play-through, hopefully more. Once I’ve done that, it gets filed in one of the other three sections of the list:

  • 1 is for records I’m really into and which I am playing a lot;
  • 2 is for albums that I like — maybe even quite a bit — but which haven’t set my world on fire;
  • 3 is essentially the ‘thanks, but no thanks’ section

Most albums that I find interesting enough to add to New, end up in section 2, with 1 being a higher bar to clear. Usually it turns out there are only a small number of records each year that end up in 3. I continue to listen to albums after they’ve moved out of the queue, and they can jump between sections. (The ↺ symbol next to an entry is me reminding myself to give a record more time.) Nothing’s final, until it’s time to compose my end of year top 20.

NB. Only full length studio albums of original music released in 2022 go on this list: no EPs, no live albums, no cover records, no remixes, no releases before this year. Of course I still play a lot of that stuff, I just don’t track it.
